What is Wobble Coefficient in post tensioning system?

Lets us answer this question from scratch, the word wobble means unsteady jerking movement from one end to other or move unevenly while coefficient is a symbol or number that defines the relation between two or more variables.

While post tensioning we use strand wire that is being joined by twisting around one and other to make a tendon, this tendon is to be inserted within a profile pipe called sheathing or duct after the concrete will achieve a specified compressive strength.

Sometimes the jacking force is applied from one end or both ends. The duct or profile pipe is to be inserted as per the designed curvature and location. The strand wire or tendon can’t be completely set as per the designed curvature and profile due to field restrictions and faulty workmanship.

Due to these reasons the curvature is bit shifted from the designed curvature and thus causes some loss in tensioning force. When jacking force is applied at one end, it decreases as we moves to the farther end due to friction between the tendon and the profile pipe or duct, this friction losses is of two types,
1)      Curvature friction loss
2)      Wobble friction loss
Curvature friction loss is basically the loss in tensioning or jacking force due to design curvature while wobble friction or wobble coefficient is a function of unintended deviation due to faulty workmanship or field restrictions.
Wobble coefficient is usually denoted by K and is measured in units of per length. It is found by multiplying the jacking force at any distance from jacking end with the average of the intended angular deviation from the design profile.

Usually having value of 0.0088.

SAP is an acronym of Structural Analysis Program, the complete name of the software is SAP2000. SAP2000 is a general purpose finite element program which performs the static or dynamic, linear or nonlinear analysis of structural system.

What is SAP2000?

SAP2000 is among the top structural engineering softwares used by civil engineers for the analysis and design of structural systems, ranging from basic to advance, 2d to 3d, simple to complex geometry.
Download SAP2000 For Free Cracked

History of SAP2000

SAP was the first finite element program (to know more about finite element go here) that was written by Prof Ed Wilson at University of California Berkeley and was first conceptualized by Prof Ray Clough in the 1960’s. SAP used the stiffness matrix for the analysis and beginning elements were brick, plate, and shell.
"Ashraf Habibullah is a structural engineer and software developer best known as the founder, President, and CEO of Computers and Structures, Inc.,"

Simple and Streamline object based modeling environment helps you in modeling, analyzing and designing the structure with optimum results as far as economic and serviceability restrictions are concerned.

With SAP2000 you can develop a computational building model with different kinds of materials, cross-sectional dimensions of various structural members like columns, beams, trusses etc and then place different sorts of loads point loads, uniform load, gradually varying loads etc on the building model that are needed and at last you test that model to ensure its survival, SAP2000 gives you accurate and precise ready to use reports and output presentable results.

SAP2000 is fully equipped with US, Canadian and International Design standards and codes like ACI concrete code, AISC building codes and AASHTO specifications.

These integrated design code features can easily generate wind, wave bridge and seismic loads with comprehensive automatic steel and concrete design checks.

Comparison of ETABS, SAFE and SAP2000

Once your model is fully analyzed and designed sharing it with architects and other team members is very easy through a Building Information Modeling (BIM) modules and API. Structural engineering’s famous companies in collaboration with CSI has interlinked SAP2000 with REVIT, TEKLA, BuildingSmart etc.
SAP2000 excels in designing following structures than other CSI softwares like ETABS,  Safe and
CSIBridge,

  • Steel Frame Design
  • Concrete Frame Design
  • Cold Formed Frame Design
  • Aluminum Frame Design

Features of CSI SAP2000

Among the various other eye catching features that must be known is self determining the center of gravity of the structure that SAP2000 can easily determine the CG and show its report for the structure along with the
assigned load by users.

"Computers and Structures, Inc. is a structural engineering software company founded in 1975 and based in Berkeley, California."
With the help of integrated Section Designer SAP2000 allows you define composite and build-up sections along with its properties like section modulus, moment of intertia, center of gravity, location of neutral axis etc.

When designing the software for impact loads of machines or non-harmonic motions of them, SAP2000 allows you to perform periodic time-history analysis for non-harmonic loading.
Other similar features include, P-Delta analysis, wave loading, Buckling analysis, OffShore related features.

The analysis procedure in SAP2000 can be divided into three steps
1. Processing
2. Solving
3. PostProcessing

In SAP2000 the built-in modeling templates, a versatile and user-friendly interface, intuitive controls and features all combine to simplify and expedite a sophisticated object based modeling.

How to Find and use Torsional Constant modification factor in ETABS?

In ETABS during the design and analysis of beams there are certain modification factors used to incorporate the uncertainty and other factors like monolithic behavior etc. One of that modification factor is Torsional constant modification factor. In this post I will be sharing with you the procedure along with an example of how to find it and use it properly.

Example

Suppose beam size is 8" x 51" and f'c = 3000 psi

First of all , put tosrional constant value of 1 in all beam sections ,

How to put torsional constant modification factor

torsional constant value of 1 in beams , for this , go to define then frame
sections then select beam sections one by one and click on modify/show property
then set modifiers then there put torsional constant value of 1 in box
How to Find Torsional Constant Modifier in ETABS

Finding PHI Tcr

now Acp = 8 x 51 => Area

and Pcp = 2(8+51) => Perimeter

Now put these values in phi.Tcr = 0.85 x 4 x (3000)^0.5 x (( 8x 51)^2)/(2(8+51))

= 262700.554 lb-inch = 21.89 kip-ft

Finding Tu

Now for Tu value , run model in etabs , then design it , after design , see all beams of size 8x51 then from these all beams right click on beams and see summary then see Tu value one by one and select maximum tu value from all 8 x 51 size beams

suppose your tu (max) from all 8 x 51 size beams comes out to be 40 kips-ft

or you can analyse in etabs then select 8x 51 size beams and from that beams see torsion values at a distance d from face of support and select maximum tu value

then torsional constant value = 21.89 / 40 = 0.547

now put this 0.547 value in all 8 x 51 size beams

Note: If your beam size is different and also f'c is different then do above all steps for that beam size and f'c

Preface

As a student or graduate engineer it is difficult to source basic design data. Having been unable to find a compact book containing this information, I decided to compile my own after seeing a pocket book for architects. I realised that a Structural Engineer’s Pocket Book might be useful for other engineers and construction industry  professionals.

My aim has been to gather useful facts and figures for use in preliminary design in the office, on site or in the IStructE Part 3 exam, based on UK conventions. The book is not intended as a textbook; there are no worked examples and the information is not prescriptive. Design methods from British Standards have been included and summarized, but obviously these are not the only way of proving structural adequacy.

Preliminary sizing and shortcuts are intended to give the engineer a ’feel’ for the structure before beginning design calculations. All of the data should be used in context, using engineering judgement and current good practice. Where no reference is give  the information has been compiled from several different sources. Despite my best efforts, there may be some errors and omissions.

I would be interested to receive any comments, corrections or suggestions on the content of the book by email at sepb@inmyopinion.co.uk.Obviously, it has been difficult to decide what information can be included and still keep the book a compact size.

Therefore any proposals for additional material should be accompanied by a proposal for an omission of roughly the same size – the reader should then appreciate the many dilemmas that I have had during the preparation of the book! If there is an opportunity for a second edition, I will attempt to accommodate any suggestions which are sent to me and I hope that you find the Structural Engineer’s Pocket Book useful.
