Performing CPM Calculations and Scheduling on Primavera [TUTORIAL]

Primavera P6 has the capability that it can perform all the major project management tasks including Project Scheduling, Project Tracking, Drawing Bar Charts or Gantt charts, Drawing Network Diagrams, Establishing the Critical Path.

CPM stands for Critical Path Method, Critical Path by Definition is the longest path of the project Network Diagram having maximum duration of the activities. The critical path also has another definition in terms of float.



Float or Slack is the duration in which the activity can be delayed or adjusted without delaying the actual project duration. The critical path includes the activities that have zero project float.

In Construction projects Float is of two types total Float and Free float. Total Float is the maximum time for which an activity can be delayed without delaying the project.
Whereas free float is maximum time for which an activity can be delayed without delaying the start of proceeding activity.

In any construction project the planning engineer first formulate WBS ( work breakdown structure) that divides the whole project in set of various works like electrical works, construction works, finishing works, plumbing works etc.

In WBS the planning engineer than assigns the activities to the corresponding WBS along with the durations estimated on the basis of past experience or some templates from the organization.

The thing that is very important in the planning stage of the project is to create links between various activities. The link or relation between activities is of two types:-

a) Predecessor
b) Successor

In primavera Successor activities are those that are to be performed immediately in succession of concerned activity. Predecessor activities are those that must be started or completed with the completion or startup of concerned activity.

Primavera relates activities in 4 different ways;

SF – Start to Finish
SS – Start to start
FS – Finish to start
FF – Finish to finish

In the planning stages we have to determine the most appropriate linkage between various activities so as to create the network diagram and determine the critical path.

In CPM calculations we determine the following;
a) Network diagram
b) Early Start
c) Early Finish
d) Late Start
e) Late Finish
f) Critical Path
g) Total Float
h) Free Float


Example;

Let’s do a simple example on Primavera to perform network diagram;

Step # 1;
Create a new project for that
File -> New Project or Press Ctrl + N

Click next in the Wizard; or select appropriate Enterprise Project Structure
Enter the Project ID as “Ex1” and Project Title as “Example 1” as shown;
Give Name to the Project
Click Finish to terminate the Project.


In the Projects Directory Open the Project you have just created as shown;
Then go to activities by clicking the activity directory button as shown;

Right click anywhere in the activities panel and click ADD or Press insert button

In the activity Name enter A and in activity Orignal Duration Enter 3 as shown;
Give Duration and name to activites
Repeat the above step and enter all the activities as shown in the table like this;

The Next step is to insert the activities relation as given in the table
For that Click the activity for which you want to give the processor or successor in our example we will give the successor and will check the predecessors accordingly.

After clicking the activity go to the activity detail tabs go to relationships as shown;

Click the assign Successor command button on the command bar as shown;
Note; you can view the command bar button text from view->toolbars-> Command bar button text

From the assign successors dialog box select  B C and D by Pressing Ctrl and using left mouse click;

After selecting the successors click the assign successor button as shown;

You will see in the activity details tabs relationships that B, C and D are added as successors.

Repeat the above procedure and assign the successor as shown in the above table.
Check Predecessors

After assigning successors you will see the predecessors already assigned as shown;

In the Next Step we will adjust the Activity layout columns to show the columns we needed for the CPM calculations;

For that right click in the activity panel and click columns as shown;

In the Columns dialog box;
By using ctrl + Click select the un-necessary columns as shown and click the remove from list button as shown;

In the available column options go to Dates-> select Early Start Early Finish Late Start Late Finish and click add to the list button as shown;

Similarly in the Duration category add Free float andTotal Float to the available list and Click Ok.

Your activity panel now should look like similar to the one show;

Now you are ready to complete the schedule process and do the CPM calculations;

For that go to Tools-> Schedule or Press F9 as shown;
Without changing anything in the schedule dialog box click the schedule button as shown;

After scheduling you will see the Gantt chart along with the CPM scheduling calculations as shown in the figure;

To see the network diagram and the critical path just click the Activty Network Button as shown; and then you will see the network diagram, the activities linked with red arrowheads dictate the critical path.

You can check the calculations and the network diagram using by-hand calculation and using CPM calculations by hand solved as follows;

ETABS Shear Wall Manual [PDF] UBC 97

ETABS features powerful and completely integrated modules for the design of steel and concrete frames, composite beams and concrete shear walls. This manual documents design of concrete shear walls using the 1997 UBC in ETABS. The goal of this manual is to provide you with all of the information required to reproduce the ETABS Shear Wall Design post processor results using hand calculations.

What is Shear Wall?

"wind and seismic loads are the most common loads that shear walls are designed to carry."
Shear wall is a structural system composed of braced panels or shear panels to resist the effects of lateral load acting on a structure, wind and seismic loads are the most common loads that shear walls are designed to carry. Under several building codes, including the international Building Code and uniform building code, all exterior wall lines in wood or steel frame construction must be braced. Depending on the size of the building some interior walls must be braced as well.


A structure of shear walls in the center of a large building – often encasing an elevator shaft or stairwell – form a shear core.

How to Find and use Torsional Constant modification factor in ETABS?

In ETABS during the design and analysis of beams there are certain modification factors used to incorporate the uncertainty and other factors like monolithic behavior etc. One of that modification factor is Torsional constant modification factor. In this post I will be sharing with you the procedure along with an example of how to find it and use it properly.


Example


Suppose beam size is 8" x 51" and f'c = 3000 psi

First of all , put tosrional constant value of 1 in all beam sections , 

How to put torsional constant modification factor

torsional constant value of 1 in beams , for this , go to define then frame
sections then select beam sections one by one and click on modify/show property
then set modifiers then there put torsional constant value of 1 in box
How to Find Torsional Constant Modifier in ETABS

Finding PHI Tcr

now Acp = 8 x 51 => Area

and Pcp = 2(8+51) => Perimeter

Now put these values in phi.Tcr = 0.85 x 4 x (3000)^0.5 x (( 8x 51)^2)/(2(8+51))

= 262700.554 lb-inch = 21.89 kip-ft

Finding Tu


Now for Tu value , run model in etabs , then design it , after design , see all beams of size 8x51 then from these all beams right click on beams and see summary then see Tu value one by one and select maximum tu value from all 8 x 51 size beams

suppose your tu (max) from all 8 x 51 size beams comes out to be 40 kips-ft

or you can analyse in etabs then select 8x 51 size beams and from that beams see torsion values at a distance d from face of support and select maximum tu value

then torsional constant value = 21.89 / 40 = 0.547

now put this 0.547 value in all 8 x 51 size beams

Note: If your beam size is different and also f'c is different then do above all steps for that beam size and f'c

How to Install Eagle Point on Windows Xp / Windows 7

I have recently Uploaded a post about Eagle point, what it is, its background and relative stuff, along with the link where you can easy download Eagle Point Full Free along with a crack.
But I have noticed that many guys are facing trouble installing the software, as there are certain issues like;
"You have set the clock of the system back, revert the changes or contact Eagle Point"
Or like
"This system of Eagle Point is not compatible with the terminal server you are running"
Or there is a big issue of the license manager;
But Done worry dear, I have got a solution for all the problems;
Here is how you can easily install eagle point without any problem;
How to Install Eagle Point on Windows XP and Windows 7

Step # 1;

Download Eagle Point from iamcivilengineer.com the link is here;


Scroll to the down of the page with the link titled with “Download Eagle Point Free full cracked”
Note: You must download the recommended version of 2011 because all the below steps are explained for Eagle Point 2011

Step # 2:

Extract the zip file you have downloaded from iamcivilengineer.com to a suitable folder as shown;
Extract the files

Step # 3:

Point to the setup.exe file in the package and double click it as shown;
Point to the location where you have located the setup file

Step # 4;

An autorun file will be opened as shown;
Click the “Install Local License (Single Seat)” button and wait for the setup to initiate; as shown;

Step # 5;

Proceed with the setup settings as it as;
Without changing any option in the setup wizard until CAD selection option.

Step # 6;

In the CAD Selection Select which type of AutoCAD version you want to associate Eagle Point with, as I have Installed AutoCAD 2005 thus I have selected that; as shown;

Step # 7;

In the Product Menu Selection; select the Civil works and all other options will be check marked as shown;
And click next;

Step # 8;

Choose the destination as you need; it is recommended that leave it as it
Ie. C:\Program files\Eagle Pont Software\EGPT

Step # 9;

In Components Selection leave all the fields as it is;

Step # 10;

All other steps are not to be changed and remained as it is;

Step # 11;

After the completion of the setup the setup will ask to restart the machine;
It is recommended to restart;
But you can choose No in this respect as well’

Step # 12;

If you now start to run eagle pint you will get an error that “This Version of EGPT does not support Terminal Server with your current license configuration. You must run EGPT with the Network License Manager in order to run EGPT on a Terminal Server Session”
OR
“Your Clock is set to behind either set if forward or contact Eagle Point”
Click OK and Let the application to close;

Step # 13;

Now the next steps are different for Windows XP and Windows 7.
For Windows 7 Users; you have to authorize this product by the “Authorize Product” application;
Located here;
C:\Program Files\Eagle Point Software\EGPT\Program\eprequst.exe

Step # 14;

Select “Authorize Product” and Click Next as shown;

In the CAD Plugin(s) authorization Code: enter the following Key as it is;
6129 4833 5593 4850 5349 7833 1007 1055 2295 0589 9
As shown;

Step # 15;

Click next and click Finish and the product will be authorized;

Step # 16;

Now simply you can run Eagle Point Directly Without any license manager problem or authorization problem;
