Civil Engineering as The least underemployed major

Recently PaySale, a salary information surveying company has conducted a survey of more than 68,000 workers to check the underemployment, overeducated, underpaid and underworked persons. The idea behind the survey was to check the majors (graduation subjects) at graduate levels.

According to Cristopher Ingram from Washinton post:

"Liberal arts majors (I'm one of them!) are used to being the punchline in jokes about un- and underemployment. But more unexpectedly, majorities of graduates with more "practical" degrees in fields like business administration also said their jobs didn't put their education, training or experience to work as much as they should."

According to the news Civil and Environmental Engineering along with some other engineering disciplines stand as the least underemployed majors meaning; if you want to get employed as early and on as much pay scale as your education demands Civil Engineering is the right profession for you.

According to the survey the most underemployed majors include criminal justice, sociology, graphic design, education and other disciplines. Very interestingly all the least underemployed majors are men dominated and most of underemployed majors is women dominated.

Here you might be asking a question what actually underemployed means? So you can ask this question from youself (if you are a professional civil engineer)
The research report (click to enlarge)
source: The washingtonPost
, any how whatever will be your answers my answer to your that question is poor pay. Yeah! Because if you have done graduation in Civil Engineering you can’t expect and will not expect a pay of social worker or similar sort of art majors.

Islamic University (IIUI) to start BS in Civil Engineering

Civil engineering being the demand of this decade to prove progress and meeting the current standards of infrastructure is essential to be included in the academics of a country.  Although there are many polytechnic institutes around the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan offering Diploma of associate engineering in Civil Technology but there are not enough institutes or public sector universities offering 4 years BS program in Civil Engineering.
Islamic University Islamabad, Pakistan

Currently most of the Civil Engineers in twin cities are either educated from National University of Science and technology (NUST) or University of Engineering and Technology, (UET), Taxila Pakistan.  Despite of the fact that there are many private sector universities trying to accommodate the talent of Rawalpindi and Islamabad but they also don’t have any sort of 4 years degree in civil engineering.

To cover this space, International Islamic University (IIUI), Islamabad had started a 4 years BS degree in civil engineering under their faculty of Engineering and Technology in collaboration with their IQRA institute of Technology.

Currently the Department is offering this degree only for males and eligibility criteria includes 60 % marks in HSSC Intermediate with Pre-Engineering subjects.
But due to high rate of boarders there currently no hostel facility is offered to students along with transportation facility which is also subjected to availability of busses.

The degree is being recognized by Higher Education Commission, Islamabad (HEC), Pakistan, but its recognition with Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) is still under question and no such information is provided.

The last date to apply for admission is 20th August 2014.

Download Free Civil PE Sample Examination Book [PDF]

The Civil PE Sample Examination Provides the opportunity to practice taking an eight-hour test similar in content and format to the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) examination in civil engineering. The Civil PE examination is an eight hour exam divided into a morning session and an afternoon session. The Morning session is known as the “breadth” exam, and the afternoon session is known as the “depth” exam. This book contains a sample breadth module and five sample depth modules one for each sub discipline the NCEES tests.

In the four-hour morning session, the examinee is asked to solve 40 problems from five major civil engineering sub-disciplines: Environmental (20%) geotechnical (20%) structural (20%) transporation (20%) and Water resources (20%) . Morning session problems are general in nature and wide-ranging in scope.

The four-hour afternoon session allows the examinee to select a depth exam module from one of the five sub disciplines (environmental, geotechnical, structural, transportation, and water resources). Each depth module is made up of 40 problems. Afternoon session problems require more specialized knowledge than those in the morning session.

All problems, from both the morning and afternoon sessions, are multiple choice. They include a problem statement with all required defining information, followed by four logical choices. Only one of the four options is correct. The problems are completely independent of each other, so an incorrect choice on one problem will not carry over to subsequent problems.
This book is written in the multiple-choice exam format instituted by the NCEES. It covers all the same topic areas that appear on the exam, as provided by NCEES.

12+ Skills civil engineering students must have

Throughout the four years I have spent in an engineering college I have gone through various challenges and difficult situations where your survival sometimes look difficult for you and you think
“Now it’s the time to leave this world”. Don’t take engineering as easy as sciences or arts, although not any work in this world is easy but civil engineering by no means is easy.

Skills civil engineering students must have

Firstly entering in an engineering college itself is a challenge and if your are among those few lucky ones who have got this change – then be happy now fellow because you have got that potential and you have those solid nerves and patience that is needed ultimately.

Now let me state here the worlds of my heart. “Among the other entire tough engineering disciplines civil engineering is toughest and the most difficult one”; you might laugh at me once, but after you have grinded in the crusher for four years your heart will speak the same sentence. The truth of this sentence can also be observed after counting the number of female students you have with you in your class. :P

One of the very irritating thing you will observe in your starting years is people making statements like
“Civil is chill”
“They have nothing to do except staring at girls”
“They are the poor masons without instruments.”
“They are the only ones…always single……”
And bla bla.

Why you have to face these statements? Answer is simple it is because apparently it feels to others that civil engineering is very easy and one might say “Oh! Yeah! Those poor illiterate contractors can also build a house for me very easily, I dn’t need you!” but the only one standing alone within the fighting ring knows how those punches and kicks feel.
In this post I will be sharing with you the skills and abilities a civil engineering students must have so as to be a successful professional civil engineer for this world.

Patience and Control on Anger

Now you have already listened to those statements, results of those statements would only be anger in you; lets first know the reason why patience is needed, listening to teachers for continuous hours without break, listening to the statements of your parents and specially father, bearing the cold irritating behavior of your class fellows, seeing no beauty and colors in your life, and a lot more others. These all factors will make your brain hot, you will easily lose your temper, so you must have some patience and control over it otherwise the results will be problems, fights, more statements, and more anger.
So try to develop an ignoring attitude to what others say, always keeps a smile on your face, remain positive and let other do what they are doing and only thing you can change is yourself, develop yourself as a calm and cool engineer.

Confidence

It is a basic need for being a successful human on this planet. Confidence will cover your inabilities and your weaknesses. It is like if we have a black ball with sun, we will not see it. So if you have confidence you will shine along with all of your weakness. Confidence is needed because you constantly have to give presentations, even in examinations you might have to give vivas; and it is like a short interview in which your instructor will judge and mark you on the basis of your confidence. Similarly to make new friends and to have a healthy communication with them you need confidence. Because it is a professional study where every one might have his/her own opinion and own designs you must have confidence on your abilities and skills to prove yourself right.
You can develop confidence by self-motivating yourself, set an aim and goal for yourself and when you will achieve it you will feel confident, participate in extra-curricular activities, sports and games it will boost up your confidence.

Physically Strong

It is the very important requirement and is needed because you in your education have to handle stones, aggregates, crush, heavy manual testing equipment, heavy machines, buckets and so on.
Similarly you have to stand while doing manual drawing for hours, and if on computer using structural and drawing softwares you need have that strong back-bone and strong mental skills to remain active and remain confident.

You in survey might have to handle equipment in rough and tough environment, might be too cold or
might be too hot, but you have to handle, you must have strong immunity to fight with those extreme weathers and those extreme laboratory environment having smell of burning sulfurs, dusting cement, soil, blasting sounds of breaking steel bars and so much more.
You have to eat well, stay healthy, sleep as required, do exercise, take fruits and juices, protect yourself from unhealthy activities and drugs etc.

Absorb Pressure

It is already being explained why pressure is there, your family might not be that much strong
economically they might be trusting you to get educated and earn a good livelihood for you and for them and thus they would be trusting you and they will have dozens of expectations for you. You at the other end are facing the odds and difficulties as a front war fighter.  You have to learn skills, softwares, remembers countless figures and countless points in your mind, thick chubby books of hundreds of pages and so on.

Thus you have stay calm, because if you take tension you might not be able to solve questions you will lose hope and will ultimately caught in that fear hole. Try to practice your religion and get those superficial powers in yourself and take help from that motivation.

Good Communication Skills

Civil engineering starts by communication, you in field have to satisfy your clients, you must have
ability to say what your mind imagines and thinks, you have to constantly stay in touch with contractor and consultant and architects and thus you have to make your point and tell them what is feasible and what not.
In class you might not understand a thing and to ask a question from your instructor you will have to have that strong edge in communication skills, any one even not that much strong technically can excel if he/she has strong communication skills.
Try to talk as much as you can with your friends on facebook, on calls, in real life as well. You in start might have a fear calling a stranger like some service stations or some companies, you must have to overcome that fear to be successful.

Good Drawing skills

Drawing is the language of engineers. You can’t communicate that much with words and writings as
you can with drawings. You must have strong imagination as what a thing will look like in a different perspective view. You might have to draw elevations, sections and so much. You must be able to use manual drawing tools like T-Square, Set Square. Even if you use AutoCAD, you must have that skill because softwares just helps you they don’t have brain.

Try to sketch anything that interests you, you only need a paper and a pencil and a rubber to initiate creativity. Don’t hesitate that what others will say or how they comment. Just be confident and tell the world you have got skills.

Strong in Mental Calculation

Calculation is what civil engineers mostly do after eating :P, as you might not have always a pocket calculator your brain must be that much fast in calculation that you might not need calculator very often.
You must be able to sum up or subtract or multiply or divide things on your finger tips. Because in calls your teacher might say “What is the dia of #4 bar” you will say ½” instantly but if you dn’t have that skill you will open up the calculator and say 4/8 = 1/2=0.5 and then say sir “0.5” and up to that time the class might be ended.

Must be rough and tough

That totally depends on what sort of field or major you select as your career, but if you hate extreme weathers, and harsh environments your chances for survival will be minimized.

Good Computer Skills

Because now a day’s computer has overcome all the calculations, manual drawing and manual structural calculations are now very rare and obsolete. Now engineers use ETABS, STAAD Pro and AutoCAD, and etc. etc. These all require from you a strong computer basic skills, you if have computer phobia that if will be difficult for you, you must start by just playing with it, do experiments, and see what happens. It will be a fun.

Good Convincing Skills

“No one is perfect” but if you have confidence you will say “NO ONE is perfect, and I am that NO ONE”. In civil engineering every field and every task has got variables that are obvious to have different answers for different humans. So you must have that convincing skills to tell others why you answer is more economical and more correct than others. Its like a marketing skills that are obviously required. Because you have to justify yourself.

Time Management

Time as we all know is money, you have to use it effectively and efficiently. Try to develop a schedule on daily basis follow it, set goals for each day and fight to achieve that goal.

Common Sense

“Civil engineering is an engineering of common sense”, this is the sentence that is being told by most of our teachers. Because in civil engineering whatever we build or whatever we develop it is physical, we don’t play with charges moving and we don’t see them. We play with bricks, aggregates, cement, sand, steel, you name it and we can touch that we can feel that and thus most laws and procedure are physical.
To understand and to imagine you must have a common sense. Like if you are a manager and you have to schedule a project activities, you must not set erecting walls before excavation and foundation design so there the common sense come.
But common sense is not very common :D

From Editor’s Desk

Civil engineering is a very interesting and very challenging field. But as it is rightly said, the more difficult the task is, the more beautiful the result will be. So don’t lose hope or don’t let yourself down, Your destiny is a few steps away.
I Hope you’d like the post, lets share it with your friends, there are many options available down there.

What is Foundation Engineering? Course content, books, solved asigments, quizzes

Foundation Engineering is a very interesting and use full subject in terms of applicability and scope in civil engineering. Importance of Foundation engineers can be understood easily by considering the importance of foundation in a structure. This post is about the introduction of foundation engineering, course contents, assignments and books which are mostly referred in foundation engineering.
Foundation Engineering

Foundation engineering is a field of civil engineering related to the analysis and design of shallow and deep foundation, along with testing of the soil and its geo-technical foundation, creating a soil profile, selecting a suitable barrow pit if needed, enhancing the bearing capacity of soil by various methods, stabilizing the soil if needed, avoiding the land-slides and other ground failures.

After studying foundation engineering you would be able to analyze the load carrying capacity of a foundation, design of shallow foundation which means selecting the suitable depth and dimensions of the footing by considering the geo-tech properties of the soil, design of pile foundation, selecting the depth and calculating the spacing within a group of piles, determining the efficiency of group of pile foundation.

You will know how to evaluate the pile load test data, draw graphs of it, how to conduct the Standard Penetration Test and understanding the test results, understanding the Cone Penetration test and how to use its properties in developing the foundation of a structure, similarly how to conduct vane shear test and using its properties find out the cohesion of the soil and using this test result design the foundation for that soil.

What is civil engineering? an introduction

Before going to the actual subject or theoretical background of the topic; let me explain why this question is mostly asked? Basically, we as humans have a natural quest for knowledge; we observe different phenomena around us and try to investigate the scientific cause behind it. This question is result of that quest, We all live in houses and we all uses road, infrastructures, utilities etc, and then we try to think how they are build and who actually design and plan these sorts of products.

If you are a novice this would be your actual state of mind; so let us explore what civil engineering actually is;

What is Civil Engineering?

Definition

Let us start by defining in so-called official words what civil engineering is?

“Civil Engineering is the utilization of concepts and laws of engineering, in developing, designing and maintaining the modern infrastructure, utilities and environment for the betterment of human beings”

I hope this definition serves the purpose but let me elaborate it;

Civil Engineering! a branch of engineering

Because we can see that always we use the world “Civil Engineering” so it is obvious that civil engineering is a branch of engineering. Engineering is utilization of laws and principles of sciences like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer sciences, Geology etc. in developing and designing various things. So we can say that scientists think about what is present in the world, or what is happening in the world, while engineers build or design what is not present in the world.
So in conclusion we can say that engineers start their work, where scientists ended.

What Civil Engineering does?

A simple answer to this question would be. Do you live in a house, yes we all do, houses, apartments, farm houses, guest houses etc, we while living in house uses water for cleaning purpose, for drinking purpose, civil engineers do every bit of it, from the slab you see on your roof, to the fixtures you see in your toilet. They design the proper slope for the drainage, they make the heavy stones of concrete span a significant amount of space over your room, they design how the load of furniture, humans, books etc transferred from slab to beam, from beam to column and then from column to the ground or soil by the help of foundation and footing.

But that’s not all; you leave your house you step on the road, civil engineers design the mix of that road, its alignment, its width, shoulders, curb stones, foot path, the drainage gutters you see, the diameter of the pipes, the discharge calculation, the storm sewer, you see the rain water running over the road or pavement and roofs and going in a systematic manner to the domestic sewer or storm sewer, civil engineers do all of this.

You drive the car on the road, you see the bridges, parks, water supply over head tanks all of these things are being tackled and handed by civil engineers, and civil engineers uses the concept of civil engineering.

After reading above paragraphs you must say that “Oh! Yeah! Its very vast”, yes you are right, it has bundles of disciplines and bundles of laws and regulations.

Civil Engineers also design the airports, the runways, their terminal buildings, the railways system, harbor and off shore construction.

Just count it and the night will be over.

Subjects of Civil Engineering

What civil engineers study, Civil engineers study the most technical and practical subjects among all other engineering. The electrical engineers play with current defined by flow of charges, but they can’t see it whole of their lives, computer engineers, software engineers, telecom engineers they all just play with things not actually there. You might uses Windows in a house you might design its width depth etc. you might move it a bit up and down in building design and you might touch it feel it. But the windows you use on your laptops, PC you can’t do those things actually with it.
But that doesn’t mean they don’t have significance or impact on humans, they for surely are doing for the betterment of human beings.
Civil Engineering as a Branch of Engineering

But Civil Engineering has its own charm, its own interesting problems, have its own interesting games.

Now back to the curriculum of civil engineering, the following are some of the subjects we study as a civil engineer;

  • -          Strength of Materials
  • -          Engineering Mechanics
  • -          Civil Engineering Drawing
  • -          Hydrology and Water Resource Management
  • -          Theory of Structures
  • -          Design of Steel Structures
  • -          Design of Structures
  • -          Hydraulics
  • -          Transportation Engineering
  • -          Reinforced Cement Concrete
  • -          Properties of Concrete
  • -          Civil Engineering Practices
  • -          Fluid Mechanics
  • -          Irrigation Engineering
  • -          Computer Applications in civil engineering
  • -          Construction, Planning and Mangement
  • -          Environmental Engineering
  • -          Foundation Engineering
  • -          Geometry, Mathematics and Statics
  • -          Earthquake engineering
  • -          Geology and Geotechnical engineering
  • -          Soil Mechanics
This whole list of subjects includes the most common subjects being taught in various institutions around the world. The name or pattern of the subject might vary from country to country and from institution to institution.

What we civil engineers study in each of these subjects will be discussed in few coming posts so stay tuned.

How to become a civil engineer?

You must now be asking this question after reading the above inspirational post; But let me be very clear in this respect, to become civil engineer is not as easy as it might look to you. There are a lot of challenges not just in the field but in academic level as well. You have a lot of labs and survey camps; you might have to do manual drawing by standing for hours on the drawing desk, you might have to play with dusty aggregates, hot black asphalt, heavy samples of concrete cubes and cylinders.
This is the basic reason why girls are reluctant to select civil engineering as their field of interest, but now the time has changed we see many civil engineering ladies in the field as project managers, design engineers.

What civil Engineers do? - just for Fun :P

From the academic point of view; you have to select pre-engineering after your matriculation or you have to select subjects like Physics, Mathematics and chemistry as your majors in O levels and A levels.

After this you must have to appear in your local engineering college / university entry exam or some other 3rd party exam which that college or university is taking as a criteria.

You must have to get sufficient marks enough for you to beat the competition that might be there in renowned university or college.

At the end you must have to be very passionate and very pumped up throughout your life, you must have to strong in your senses, physically and mentally. You must have strong tension absorber, you must know how to handle or manage various categories of people or various calibers.

About the Degree

In the starting level Civil engineering in many countries is a 4 year Undergraduate programs along with Master program in any of the sub-disciplines that might extend up to 2 years, that might further go up to the Doctorate and Post-Doctorate depending upon what you really want in your career.
In most of the countries throughout the world 4 years of Undergraduate program is sufficient for you to earn a handsome livelihood, and can even make you the head of various departments in governmental and private sectors.
Experience in civil engineering is very important, all the jobs or posts need a fair amount of experience starting from minimum of 5 years which can go up to 30 years as well.

Recognition of your civil engineering degree is very important from some genuine engineering councils of your country or you might have to pass a Professional Engineer (PE) exam to ensure the true worth your degree.
