Piles are the columnar elements in the foundations which have function of transferring loads from super structure through week compressible strata or through water onto stiffened or more compact and less compressible soils. 

What are piles?


They may be required to carry uplift loads when used to support tall structures subjected to overturning forces from wind or waves. 
Piles used in marine structures are subjected to lateral loads from the impact of berthing ships and from waves. 

Combinations of vertical and horizontal loads are carried where piles are used to support to support retaining walls, bridge piers and abutments and machinery foundations.

When to use piles?


When the upper soil layer (s) is highly compressible and too weak to support the load transmitted by the superstructure, piles are used to transmit the load to underlying bed rock as shown in figure. 
When bed rock is not located at reasonable depth, piles are used to gradually transmit structural load to the soil. The resistance to the applied structure load is derived mainly from the frictional resistance developed at the soil-pile interface as shown in figure 

When subjected to horizontal forces, piles foundation can resist by bending, while still supporting vertical loads transmitted by the superstructure. This situation is generally encountered in the design and construction of earth retaining structures and foundation of tall structures that are subjected to high wind and earth quake forces 

In many cases, expensive and collapsible soils may be encountered at the site, the soil may extend to a great depth below the ground surface. Expansive soil swells and shrinks depending on increase or decrease of moisture content. The swelling pressure of such soils can be considerably high. Pile foundations are best alternate when piles are extended beyond the active zone, which undergo swelling and shrinking.

Foundations of such structures, such as transmission towers of offshore platforms and basement mats below the water table are subjected to uplifting pressure. Piles are sometimes used for these foundations to resist the uplifting forces.

Bridge abutments and piers are occasionally constructed over pile foundations to avoid the possible loss of bearing capacity that a shallow foundation might suffer because of soil erosion at the ground surface.

  • Large Displacement Piles
  • Small Displacement Piles
  • Replacement Piles

Analysis of Different Hydraulic Parameters on the Structural Design of Dharma Nullah Bridge Taxila

Project Abstract.


The purpose of this project is to thoroughly study the various parameters affecting the hydraulic design of a bridge and studied various methods for the calculation of discharge for Hydraulic design of Bridge. The structural design of the bridge was carried out on well-known software named as CSI Bridge. This bridge was designed and constructed by the Provincial Highway Department. It seems that designed height and span ofthe bridge was not truly based upon actual hydraulic parameters.

About thesis

This thesis is written in partial fulfillment of the B.Sc. degree in CIVIL ENGINEERING. The project thesis includes theoretical background and importance of each parameter affecting the design of bridge. Detailed steps of designing the bridge on the software are also included, different tables and figures are used to simply elaborate the design procedure. For the purpose of study data for hydraulic and structural design was collected from Provincial Highway Department. For the hydraulic design of the bridge, one year flow in th DHAIVIRAH Nullah was measured at the selected location.

Geometric Design of Rural Roads and Urban Streets [PPT/PPTX]

This report presents guidance on the application of geometric design criteria to facilities functionally classified as local roads and streets.
The report is subdivided into sections on rural roads, urban streets.
A local road or street serves primarily to provide access to farms, residences, businesses, or other abutting properties.

Although local roads and streets may be planned, constructed, and operated with the predominant function of providing access to adjacent property, some local roads and streets serve a limited amount of through traffic.
Such roads properly include geometric design and traffic control features more typical of collectors
and arterials to encourage the safe movement of through traffic.
 On these roads, the through traffic is local in nature and extent rather than regional, intrastate, or interstate.
Local roads and streets constitute a high proportion of the roadway mileage in the country.
The traffic volume generated by the abutting land uses are largely short trips or a relatively small part of longer trips where the local road connects with major streets or highways of higher classifications.

 Because of the relatively low traffic volumes and the extensive mileage, design criteria for local roads and streets are of a comparatively low order.

However, to provide the requisite traffic mobility and safety—together with economy in construction, and operation—they must be planned, and designed to be suitable for predictable traffic operations and in consistent with the development and culture.

A special task force to investigate the collapse of the bridges.A committee, formed at the direction of this task force.All bridges longer than 20ft were required to be described and registered in a national database and thus the National Bridge Inventory (NBI) was established.Several studies about the nation’s bridges have been published in the last few years

Summary of Presentation:


As bridges grow older, there rehabilitation and retrofitting becomes increasingly important.  Deterioration of concrete, corrosion of steel, heavier life load, increase traffic density, poor resistance of fatigue, wind and seismic load, damage due to fire and collision, and normal wear due to aging or some of the reason for rehabilitating or retrofitting of a bridge.  Experience with earth quake has indicated serious inadequacies in many bridges word wide in terms of their safety and integrity during earth quake (Priescley and Seilble, 1994).  Most of these bridges were designed when the state of knowledge required for earth quake resistant design was still evolving.  As a result, many bridges are now being retrofitted (or replaced) to endure seismic forces according to the new standard.

Vehicular and Industrial Combustion Emissions Presentation

Combustion is a process by which any thing burns, in our industries and in our vehicles we utilize this process to get some energy and then some power. But these combustion processes are not prefect and thus we have some emissions along with it which produces many harmful and hazardous effects on our environment.

Abstract of the presentation

In this presentation we will introduce to you the process of combustion going on there in the vehicles and in the various different industries like cement industry, paper industry etc. Then we will cover why the emissions are generated from vehicles and from the industries. After that the introduction of fuel is there, that what are fuels, what are their various types. Then the introduction of certain vehicular and industrial combustion emissions is there like; Particulate Matter (PM2.5) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and others like Carbon Dioxide, Carbon Monoixde, Sulfur dioxide, NOx etc.
After this the harmful effects of these emissions is produced on the health of humans and on overall environment like ozone depletion, ground ozone production and smog formation, and at last the global warming.
At the end we have discussed what are the various responsible organization, how they are trying to control vehicular and industrial combustion emissions, and then various recommendations are produced.

Conclusion of the Presentation:

  1. Vehicular and industrial combustion emissions are health damaging to alarming level.
  2. Increase in economic standards of community, more usage of products, more vehicles more pollutants
  3. Pollutants from industries and vehicles causes severe health problems like cancer, heart diseases and breathing problems.
  4. Pollutants also effect indirectly in the form of acid rain, smog formation and climate change
  5. Introduction of environment friendly technologies like fuel cells etc
  6. By spreading awareness among masses will greatly improve the quality of air we are breathing in.
